Be Slow To Speak
Posted under: Anger Managing Emotions
James 1:19-20 says, “Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires.”
When you talk to someone, are you ever thinking about your response more than you're listening to them? Do you often speak before thinking about how your words will affect someone?
God calls us to listen first, then speak after considering our words. This will help us not become angry so quickly. Anger isn't a sin but allowing your emotions to rule your response can be.
When you feel anger rising up, ask yourself these questions:
-
Do the words I want to say bring glory to God?
-
Will I regret my words later?
-
Will my words bring unnecessary pain or heartache to someone?
If the answer to any of these questions is “yes,” don’t say the words. Go quickly to God and ask Him for help managing your emotions.
